2015

Founded to electrify everything

Rick Luebbe and Dr. Rick Costantino launched Group14 after seeing the need for better energy storage solutions. To transform lithium-ion batteries into silicon batteries, Group14 developed its Applied Innovation methodology, a foundational framework with parallel approaches to material and manufacturing innovation. By doing so, Luebbe and Dr. Costantino ensured that SCC55™ could be developed in a lab and scaled to reach global markets.

2019

Growing with the support of key strategics in the battery industry

Led by Amperex Technologies Limited (ATL), with participation from BASF Venture Capital, Cabot Corporation, Showa Denko (now Resonac), and OVP Venture Partners, our $18 million Series A funding enabled us to scale SCC55™ and launch our pilot factory.

2020

Accelerating the path to our first BAM factory

We secured $17 million in Series B funding led by SK materials, one of the world’s top manufacturers of special and industrial gasses, along with participation from returning investor, OVP Venture Partners, which supported the launch of our first commercial factory in the US.

2021

Kickstarting commercial manufacturing globally

We launched our first commercial Battery Active Materials factory (BAM-1) in Woodinville, WA, before announcing a joint venture with SK to build a BAM factory in South Korea. Within the year, we made significant progress in securing our capabilities to deliver silicon battery materials for global automotive and consumer electronics OEM customers.

2022

Securing private and public sector support for our second US BAM factory

One of the largest climate tech rounds of the year, our $614 million Series C funding round was led by Porsche AG with participation from Decarbonization Partners, Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund and more. This was quickly followed by a $100 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, which accelerated the buildout of our second commercial US factory.

2023

Expanding our manufacturing capabilities from North America to Europe

We broke ground on our second commercial factory, BAM-2, located in Moses Lake, WA. Beginning with two manufacturing modules, each capable of delivering up to 2,000 tons of SCC55™ annually, BAM-2 is expected to create hundreds of jobs. We also acquired Schmid Silicon and its exceptional silane process expertise to expand our European manufacturing footprint and deliver the world’s best silicon battery materials.

Meet our leadership

Rick Luebbe

CEO, Co-Founder

Rick has more than two decades of experience both in technology and in management consulting. Before founding Group14, he co-founded and led EnerG2 as CEO through its growth stages from 2003 until its acquisition by BASF in 2016. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Oscilla Power, is an Army veteran, and holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Rick Costantino

CTO, CO-FOUNDER

Rick has spent more than 20 years developing products across the biopharmaceutical and chemical industries at companies such as Genentech, Alkermes, and Nastech. Prior to founding Group14, he served as the VP of Research and Development at EnerG2. Holder of more than 60 U.S. patents and 50 publications, Rick earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from MIT.

Mike Willis

CFO

Mike has spent his career providing strategic, financial and operational support to public and private high-growth companies across a wide range of sectors. Over the last 15 years, he has worked within the sustainability sector, serving as the CFO of Nasdaq-listed Gevo and Westport Fuel Systems, and as an investor with the Virgin Green Fund. He holds an MBA from INSEAD in France.

Eric Robinson

COO

With a strong background in the specialty chemicals and materials industries, Eric leverages more than 30 years of experience in operational and supply chain leadership roles to execute on long-term business goals at Group14. Prior to joining Group14, Eric has worked with companies including ADA Carbon Solutions, Gopher Resource, HaloSource, Hexion and the FMC Corporation.

Chris Piercy

CCO

Chris has more than 20 years of experience leading business development from key partnerships to fundraisings, IPOs, and acquisitions for deep tech companies. Chris brings strong technical and international business experience, having previously led global business development at Polysync Technologies, Kalray, ClearSpeed Technology, and more.

Angie Peterson

SVP, People and Culture

A strategic HR leader, Angie has spent over 20 years driving high-performance cultures for global companies and championing a values-driven, diverse and inclusive workplace in support of talent acquisition and retention. Prior to joining Group14, Angie has worked with companies including Terex, Washington Mutual and AT&T.

Jennifer Brossett

VP, Supply Chain

With more than two decades of experience in the manufacturing industry, Jennifer leads Group14’s global logistics strategy for its entire value chain. Before joining Group14, she spent 13 years at ADA Carbon Solutions as Operations Controller and then as Supply Chain Director.

Matt Laccinole, P.E.

VP, Major Projects & Planning

With 30 years of experience in the development and execution of multi-billion-dollar industrial infrastructure-related projects, Matt is spearheading Group14’s construction of its Battery Active Materials (BAM-2) factory in Moses Lake, WA. Previously, Matt was responsible for the growth, management and execution of large-scale industrial projects and programs at HDR, Inc. and Worley Parsons.

Andy McDowell

VP, EH&S

With nearly two decades of experience as an Environmental Health & Safety leader, Andy is recognized for promoting a culture of safety and environmental stewardship across an array of global manufacturing companies. Prior to joining Group14, Andy worked with Advanced Emissions Solutions, Essity, and Cleveland-Cliffs.

Brian Neville

VP, Corporate Controller

With nearly three decades of accounting and finance experience in technology, financial institutions, telecommunications, NGOs, and startups, Brian oversees Group14’s accounting and financial management. Brian has held senior leadership roles at companies including JP Morgan Chase, T-Mobile, Core Scientific, PATH, and more.

Grant Ray

VP, Global Market Strategy

Grant is an entrepreneurial veteran, helping bring new ideas into the moving world. He has defined go-to-market strategies, customer trends, and platform solutions across automotive, autonomous, and deep tech sectors. Prior to Group14, Grant held leadership roles at Polysync, SF Motors, Alta Motors, and Piaggio. He holds an MBA from Pepperdine University.

Ashok Saraswat

VP, R&D

With more than 30 years of research, engineering, and leadership experience at global battery, energy, and nanotechnology companies, Ashok now leads R&D at Group14. Prior to joining Group14, Ashok served as SVP of Battery Technology at Reliance Industries Limited and the VP of Advance Battery Engineering – Energy Storage at Ola Electric.

Chris Timmons

VP, Engineering

Chris is responsible for the development and commercial implementation of Group14’s manufacturing processes. His experience covers the spectrum from safe and cost-effective manufacturing to continuous improvement and ISO-level quality management.

Lisa Wernli

VP, IT & Security

With nearly three decades at the helm of information technology, security, and data management, Lisa oversees the design, development, implementation, support, and maintenance of information systems and security for Group14. Before joining Group14, Lisa served as CIO and EVP of Wireless Advocates and Car Toys, Regional Technology Coordinator at Whole Foods Market, and Director of IT at Peterbilt Motors Company and PACCAR Engine Company.

Reza Zehtaban

VP, Silane

Reza oversees global operations and manufacturing for Group14’s silane production, a critical precursor to its silicon battery technology. Prior to Group14, Reza served as CEO of Schmid Silicon Technology GmbH, Director of Integrated Fab Solutions for Schmid Group, and VP of Business Development for Oerlikon Solar.
