The panel discussion stemmed from the Net-Zero Industry Act, proposed by the European Commission in March 2023 to help overcome barriers and strengthen European manufacturing capacity for net-zero technologies. The measures in the Act are intended to make clean technology manufacturing in the EU more resilient and competitive as it strives to reach climate neutrality by 2050.
“We see clear alignment between Group14’s vision to strengthen localized battery supply chains and Germany’s commitment to building a robust clean energy economy,” commented Dr. Costantino. “By securing local access to key silicon battery technology and materials, we’re bolstering the battery manufacturing landscape and expanding employment opportunities in the clean energy sector, which are critical steps toward global decarbonization.”
Group14 selected Germany for its European base of operations in 2023 when it acquired Schmid Silicon to secure local access to silane gas. Germany is an ideal location for Group14 to establish a foothold in Europe, due to its proximity to many of the company’s key partners and customers, including Porsche AG and BASF. Group14 is actively working with local communities to train and develop workers to re-commission and operate the silane factory in Spreetal, Germany.
In addition to proximity to customers and partners, Group14’s investment in Germany is expected to create new economic opportunities for local communities in Saxony, bringing the region closer to establishing a global clean energy economy built on next-generation manufacturing.
